patchwork scarf

.
Now that I finally get how to do tunisian entrelac, I decided to put some Patons Satin Crimson & Snow to use and make a patchwork scarf.
.

.
I used an H hook -- and yes, tucking in those ends did get tedious -- but it made for some mindless handwork while watching tv.
.

The edges curled fiercely until I added the triangular block to the edge. And then after steam blocking it --- oh my. It is one of the softest things.
.

This booklet was key in helping me understand the whole concept of constructing the entrelac blocks.
.
.
Whew. Just think of the endless possibilities of color combinations you could make......

Challengers Ready!?

Ok I've been thinking about it for a little while and I'm going to do it.... I'm going to make February the month for pushing boundaries, for exploring possibilities, for (hopefully) some down right silly crochet weirdness!

Yes having been inspired by Coats Crafts UK's post about fiber activist Rockpool Candy and her use of her body and plastic tubing to crochet with I want to make February the month we all challenge ourselves to try new crochet materials. And I'm not just talking about the usual non yarn stuff like cut up plastic bags or rope I mean some real crazy stuff like cooked spaghetti or old shoe laces!

I'm thinking of calling it 'Flipping Febuary' (working title, open to suggestions) and anyone can participate. During February just post a photo of some crochet you've done using any non-yarn material. You don't have to crochet a real item like a blanky or scarf, just crochet a few rows or a square. Make sure to note what material you have used. I encourage you to really see how far you can push the boundaries. The funnier and weirder the better!

I think there should be a prize ( I will put something together) for the craziest post. To select the winner and to make it fair I think we should have like a vote in system. Can we put polls on this site or something that tallies votes???? The voting will be open to everyone followers and participats.

So I hope you all think this is a fun idea too and join in. Let me know what you think and if you want to change or add anything to the challenge.

You begin a crocheted rug of course...

World’s Biggest Crochet Hook

Lady using her body to crochet giant yarn
Crochet fans will be amazed at this art installation recently created at the Turnpike Gallery in Leigh, Greater Manchester. Using her entire body as the crochet hook, the artist has created a huge pod big enough to sleep in.
The artist is known as rockpool candy, and is what she calls a fibre activist. The giant formation is crocheted from thin plastic tubing showing that you really can crochet from just about anything.  The crochet hook is, in fact, the artist's entire body.
This is probably the craziest crochet you will ever have seen. It makes you realise you can crochet with just about anything.
Why stop at dainty crochet, when chunkier yarns give fantastic effects too. As long as you have a big enough hook, you can crochet with anything. Try Rowan Biggy Print with a 20mm hook. Move over traditional, and make way for experimental crochet.

Put A Cap On It

This photo is of the last bunch of caps I delivered to the Sioux Hospital here in South Dakota. They make visitations to the home and to the reservation so they are always in need of any and all sizes of caps. You know when you make the little newborn size then change to an adult size it feels really funny. The newborn one takes no time to make and it is so cute and tiny. The adult one you actually have the chance to work in some stripes or ripples or something because of their size. There are so many in need during the winter and this winter has really been a doozy and it's not near over yet. When we get down about our life or that the electric bill is so high, I have to stop and try to put myself in the place of others that don't even have running water or heat of any sort. I sit here playing with my yarn or playing on the computer and I forget how lucky I am to be able to do that. I guess all this mumbling is close to that movie, "It's A Wonderful Life." You don't really know how good you have things until there gone, and you don't know what a difference your little bit of help would make. What it comes down to is, that this winter I am making all the caps I can so maybe my little bit of work might warm someone else. You have a great weekend.

Sugar 'N Cream Striped Dishcloths

The Sugar 'N Cream Stripes Yarn is so fun to crochet with - the colors are so bright and cheery you can't help but to make a bunch of Dishcloths .  This is what I have been working on.  I made flowers  using a bloom loom (remember those - a blast from the past).  These dishcloths work up fast and can be done with one ball of yarn.

Hello from a Newbie

Having been away from crochet & knitting for many years due to a shoulder injury, it is great to re-learn these techniques. I have spent several months crocheting scarves and knitting hats in time for Christmas presents and decided I will be better prepared for next Christmas. I have ordered wools to start making next years gifts.
Thank you for allowing me to join your crocheting community. I look forward to keeping up to date with all your activities and look forward to contributing a little of my work
